DANTE - New Technologies Development and Intersection Design, for Integrated Road Safety Improvement (TO.019)

A National Consortium composed by several leading companies on the traffic sector and with the support of research centers, has developed DANTE project. One of the results of the project is an innovative system to improve road safety at T junctions and crossroads on conventional double way roads, where most fatal accidents on that kind of roads take place.
The developer is looking for commercial agreements.

Description:

The system consists of two stereoscopic cameras that detect the trajectory and speed of the vehicle on the main road when it is 80–250 m. from the intersection.

A Lidar system detects any other vehicles within 80 m of the intersection, while a Stop-control system detects the speed and trajectory of the vehicle on the secondary road, determining whether or not it is going to stop.

These integrated systems detect what is happening at the intersection by means of a centralizing system that analyses data and, if a possible conflict is detected, triggers an alarm to warn the drivers involved.

There are two ways of communicating with road users: with variable messages and beacons of different types on the road itself, plus an I2V system on the vehicle, presenting the information on a PDA device.

Innovative aspects:

Detection systems used in open environments by the moment, are usually based in electromagnetic loops, with this kind of technology is not possible to detect uniquely the vehicles.
With this new system vehicles are detected by video analysis technology, which provides uniquely vehicle identification, with a high reliability, and also the system notifications are made by innovative products, using mobile devices with I2V communications and variable message signals with low energetic waste.

E-Rescue System (TO.016)

A Spanish SME has developed and patented a device for vehicle seats with emergency kit and stretcher incorporated. It is a fully-integrated device in car seats. The company is looking for technical cooperation, joint-venture agreements and licence agreements.

Description:
When it comes to rescuing an injured person from a vehicle following a traffic accident, it is very frequently necessary to immobilize the person by keeping the head-neck-column of the person immobilized in order to be able to proceed to his or her extraction or extrication from the vehicle so that they can be taken to the nearest hospital. In order to immobilize the victim there exists specific rescue equipment such as soft collars, extrication jackets, back boards, etc., which are brought and applied by the rescue teams. In theory, this rescue equipment has a series of drawbacks.
The first drawback is that the equipment has to be available at the moment of the rescue, which is not always the case, as for example in situations in which the rescue has to be carried out with considerable urgency, even before the arrival of the recovery teams at the site of the accident, and when, in the case of a multiple accident, the recovery teams do not have sufficient equipment for being applied to all the injured people needing it.
Another drawback, especially important when it comes to immobilizing the neck-column axis of the injured person by means of an immobilization board, is that, in order to be able to attach that board to the back of an injured person who is still sitting in his or her seat inside the vehicle, it is usually necessary to move the person away from the back of the seat in order to introduce the board between the back of the injured person and the back of the seat, which, on the one hand, requires moving the person with the danger that this could cause spinal injuries and, on the other, in order to introduce the board between the back of the injured and the back of the seat, it is necessary to have some maneuvering space which is not always available in vehicles that have been involved in accidents, and finally, the application of those boards requires a length of time that in some cases is excessive under the circumstances of the accident or of the person who has to be rescued.

Innovative Aspects:

  • The installation of the seats in the assembly line would not be altered by the addition of this system.
  • E-Rescue System® does not alter the aesthetics, ergonomics, quality or geometry of the seat. The system is hidden.
  • The evacuation of people with this system is always faster and safer than conventional methods of rescue teams, because the patient is not handled during the immobilization process.
  • Each passenger has the system fully integrated into their seat. This is an important advantage, because the ambulances are usually equipped with a single kit. In addition, any person involved in the accident scene may help the victim while awaiting the arrival of emergency services.

E-Light: Innovative emergency chemiluminescent lighting system for cars (TO.015)

A Spanish SME has developed and patented an emergency lighting system for vehicles. The system is especially useful for vehicle accidents, as it allows a quickly identification, definition and illumination of the crash site. The company is looking for Joint venture agreement, manufacturing agreement, technical cooperation and/or license agreement.

Description:
A Spanish SME has developed and patented an emergency lighting system for vehicles. In the case of a breakdown or, especially, of a traffic accident, involving a vehicle the position of the vehicle needs to be signaled in order to warn other drivers of the presence of the stationary vehicle so as to avoid subsequent chain collisions.

This emergency lighting system actives itself when the airbags signal is activated in case of an accident. The system sprays a luminescence liquid to the car; also the system includes some transparent tubes, outsider the car, which is filled up with the liquid. The car is visible at nigh and more accidents can be avoided.

The activation can also be done pushing an activation button. This option is really interesting in cases of potential danger. The signalisation also allows to locate car that have gone outside the track and fragments spread around the accident site.

The invention comes within the technical sector of safety systems and particularly emergency signaling systems for zones that need to be lit in order to provide greater visibility for parts and/or environs of installations or vehicles. This signaling is especially important in situations in which the vehicle is stationary in a position that invades the carriageway and/or in atmospheric conditions of low visibility.

The invention is particularly useful in the emergency signaling of vehicles and parts thereof, such as ships, aircraft, helicopters, containers, railway and metro trains and, especially, for land vehicles including mobile machinery for public works. It can also be applied to emergency lighting for zones in industrial facilities such as ports, airports, sports centers, metro and railway stations and tunnels, to buildings such as homes and offices, sports centers and shopping centers. The system is especially useful for vehicle accidents, as it allows a quickly identification, definition and illumination of the crash site.

Innovative aspects:
The liquid has 2 purposes, first is to illuminate the car to avoid other collisions, especially at night, and the second is to easy the rescue and localisation works. It reduces time to signal the site and to recognise the site.

New “Antikamikaze System” (TO.013)

A Spanish leading company in the road safety sector has developed a new “Antikamikaze System”, which detects vehicles that circulate in the opposite direction and warns other drivers by sending a message to the light frames and informs the Police.

Description:

The company presents a system of detection of vehicles that circulate in the opposite direction to the authorized one, what is commonly known as “Kamikazes“.

The system consists of a series of Doppler sensors and LED signs that are placed in the exits of the divided highways and freeways. When it detects the infraction (200m range), it activates a visual notice (luminous LED signalling), being able to incorporate also sonorous reinforcement, in order to prevent the "confused" driver from continuing and gaining access to the route in the opposite direction. The system acts in two ways: first it alerts the driver on the scene, but also sends an alert message to the Traffic Control Centre or local authorities, notifying that an incursion in the wrong way is taking place.

The developer manufactures products of common use in road and highway works marking, like road post, cylindrical bollards polyethylene barrier, roadstud, beam barrier cateyes, speed bumps, cones, luminous devices … anything to provide safety to road workers and drivers.

The company designs and makes products and solutions for specific problems, applying the latest technology in intelligent signalling, by using sensors, hardware, dopplers, presence detectors, LED lighting, variable message devices, solar powering, … to guarantee the safety and to optimize the good use of our highways.

Innovative aspects:

Till now, no device existed to avoid this type of accidents, theses drivers provoke many deaths and consequences by this cause, in most cases, we speak about a simple momentarily absent-mindedness, about drivers of advanced age, foreign (mostly British) or just drunk driving effects. If they are warned at the moment of this involuntary infraction, automatically the danger situation is minimized.

SAFECROSS: Smart Pedestrian Crossing for People with Reduced Mobility (TO.012)

A Spanish company has developped a new product that consists of smart management of traffic-light-controlled pedestrian crossings, where an artificial-vision system detects any people who are still crossing when the green “cross” phase is coming to an end.  The company seeks commercial agreements.

Description:

The system has been designed for people with reduced mobility, as it provides real-time monitoring of how quickly people are using the crossing.
If any pedestrians are detected (for example, because of crowding, disabled people, etc.), the traffic controller automatically adds more time to the green phase. If the crossing is empty when the time is running out, vehicle traffic can proceed, thereby contributing towards streamlining traffic flow.

Functional specifications:
The system has the following basic features:

•Detection of pedestrians using the crossing.
•Extra lighting in addition to street-lighting when pedestrians are using the crossing.
•Easy adaptation to a SICE MF4 or MFU3000 regulator.

The SAFECROSS system is made up of the following components:
  • Artificial vision camera(s) automatically detect(s) any pedestrian(s) using the crossing.
  • Extra LED lighting on the crossing when it is being used by pedestrians at night.
  • Intelligent Lighting
  • Phase-extension algorithm.

If the traffic controller detects anyone still using the crossing when it is reaching the end of the pedestrians’ green phase, the time (minimum time) is extended until the pedestrian has crossed to the other side.

This feature is enabled when the pedestrian light turns green.

In parallel, the extra LED lighting on the crossing is turned on to supplement the ambient street-lighting.

Innovative aspects:
Adaptative pedestrian detection modifies traffic controller timing in order to make road crossings safer.

Smart sensors for energy efficient cities (TO.006)

A Spanish research group from Alcalá University has developed a smart-sensors-based technology that can be applied to improve the energy efficiency of urban environments in an holistic fashion. This technology covers areas such as Intelligent Transportation Systems and Energy Efficient Measurement applications. The group is interested in establishing commercial or technical cooperation agreements with companies involved in urban traffic management or energy distribution and generation.

Description:
The highest energy costs of cities are focused on transportation systems and heating/refrigerating systems. The development of different technologies specially designed to optimise the energy consumption needs to deal with both type of systems to have a proper impact. Following this statement, a research group of the University of Alcalá has developed two main new technologies. On the one hand, a set of smart sensors have been created to optimise the use of transportation systems in urban environments. Among them we remark:

- Signalised roundabouts and intersections, adaptive to the current traffic status.
- Adaptive traffic monitoring and management.
- SmartCross: optimal traffic lights timing by pedestrian detection in pedestrian crossings.
- Prioritising public transport vehicles in roundabouts and intersections.
- Outdoor parking slots monitoring by a fleet of public transport vehicles applied to reduce the time needed to find a free parking slot.

On the other hand, thermal imaging technology is also available to identify homes and buildings that may need improvements in their isolation installations. A specially vehicle is equipped with infrared cameras, GPS and range-based sensors. It takes thermal images of homes in winter and summer months to automatically identify buildings showing poor isolation capabilities (heat and cool losses trough poorly isolated walls, windows and roofs). These images contain information about the global positioning of each one of the buildings analysed. Thus, digital and interactive maps can be provided to the user, including specific information about thermal isolation of each of the elements analysed by the system.

Innovative aspects

In the context of transportation, innovative aspects come from the use of new sensors that provide richer information than current sensor technologies, as well as the novelty of the proposed applications. On the other hand, the automatic creation of thermal efficiency digital maps has not been proposed up to now. These maps will be very useful for local authorities to improve the energy efficiency of their local communities.

Current stage of development of the research result:
Development phase

Funding Research:
National project

Competitive advantages

Competitive advantages by commercialising new systems focused on improving the energy efficiency, reducing emissions and ecological foot of cities. The main, but not unique, customers are local authorities of towns, cities and communities. This technology can be seen as an holistic system, or it can be offered in its different parts adapted to different needs.

Face tracking and pose estimation with automatic 3D model construction (T.O. 004)

A research group from the Electronic Department of Alcalá University has developed a method for robustly tracking and estimating the face pose of a person using stereo vision. The method is invariant to identity and does not require previous training. A face model is automatically initialised and constructed on-line. This method could serve as the basis of a monitoring system for driving or behavior analysis of drivers and it has been tested on sequences registered in a naturalist simulator and a moving car. The group is interested in commercial agreements with companies from the automotive components sector, simulators designers and electronic entertainment (interfaces for PCs, TVs, video games, etc).

Description:
The model is formed by a set of 3D tri-dimensional points of the face. These points are automatically selected in the first image obtained from the cameras. The face is located using Viola&Jones method, and points in the face that present adequate characteristics for tracking are found with Harris detector. Up to 30 points are used.

The image patches around the 2D projections of these points on each camera are tracked on each frame, using the Simultaneous Modelling and Tracking (SMAT) algorithm. This algorithm builds a model of the changes of the appearance or texture around each point.

The 3D pose is obtained from the 2D points using POSIT, redundantly for both cameras to improve robustness.

Tracking may fail for some points on each frame. RANSAC is used to discard erroneous points from the estimation of the pose. After a set of correctly tracked points (inliers) is obtained, the position of the outlier points is reset accordingly to the estimated pose.

Points become occluded as the head turns and can not be tracked. The system is able to robustly estimate the pose of the face in presence of turns of up to ±90º. It uses a novel technique that completes the model as the face rotates and employs the method of bundle Adjustment to adjust the model.

The system is able to track a driver’s face robustly in real conditions. Experimental results and an analysis of the performance are ready to be presented.

Innovative aspects:

For the first time, this system of computer vision is able of recognizing the orientation of the human face, with no need of previous identification of the person or offline training.

This system is innovative in the way of joining the three algorithms that uses for its functioning: SMAT, RANSAC and POSIT. To the best of our knowledge they had never been used before in that way.
Current stage of development of the research result:
Developed, available for demonstration

Funding Research:
National project

Competitive advantages:

This method works in real time (30 images per second) and it takes 33 milliseconds to execute the algorithms.

It is a very robust system that keeps on working even in situations for which the model has not been designed (sudden turns of face, strong shadows, etc). The system works with increased estimation error but tracking of the face is not lost.
