Description:
The system has been designed for people with reduced mobility, as it provides real-time monitoring of how quickly people are using the crossing.
If any pedestrians are detected (for example, because of crowding, disabled people, etc.), the traffic controller automatically adds more time to the green phase. If the crossing is empty when the time is running out, vehicle traffic can proceed, thereby contributing towards streamlining traffic flow.
Functional specifications:
The system has the following basic features:
•Detection of pedestrians using the crossing.
•Extra lighting in addition to street-lighting when pedestrians are using the crossing.
•Easy adaptation to a SICE MF4 or MFU3000 regulator.
The SAFECROSS system is made up of the following components:
- Artificial vision camera(s) automatically detect(s) any pedestrian(s) using the crossing.
- Extra LED lighting on the crossing when it is being used by pedestrians at night.
- Intelligent Lighting
- Phase-extension algorithm.
If the traffic controller detects anyone still using the crossing when it is reaching the end of the pedestrians’ green phase, the time (minimum time) is extended until the pedestrian has crossed to the other side.
This feature is enabled when the pedestrian light turns green.
In parallel, the extra LED lighting on the crossing is turned on to supplement the ambient street-lighting.
Innovative aspects:
Adaptative pedestrian detection modifies traffic controller timing in order to make road crossings safer.
